As expected, Leon Cort signed for a Charlton on a permanent basis on Thursday.
Cort’s contract with Burnley was cancelled by mutual consent earlier in the week and the Guyanan international defender has penned a deal that will keep him at The Valley until the end of next season. Here’s what Cort said after completing the move:
“I’m delighted to commit my future to Charlton,I’ve really enjoyed the first half of the season here and look forward to helping the club get back into the Championship.
“These are exciting times at Charlton and I’m delighted to be a part of it.
“The lads have been brilliant and helped settle me in straight away. It certainly made me feel like I’ve been here a lot longer.
“I have family and friends around me and Charlton is a massive club with a great fanbase, so what more could you ask for?”
“There is definitely such a thing as a promotion mentality. If you lose a game, you can assess what went wrong but you cannot dwell on it, and people can’t start losing faith and getting uptight. If you do, it will be a sinking ship.
“We’ve twice moved on from defeats in a really positive fashion, and we head to Sheffield Wednesday in good spirits,” said Cort.
Leon started the league games against Stevenage, the home game with Brentford and is a regular on the bench, providing cover for Matt Taylor and Michael Morrison.
Barnsley have accepted a bid from Charlton for Peckham born striker Danny Haynes. Haynes, will be 24 next Thursday and is out of favour at Oakwell. He has blistering pace – one asset missing from Charlton’s current squad – and can operate as a striker or on the right of midfield.
Powell sees him as a striker which is the position favoured by the player. The manager thinks a deal could even be done quickly and had this to say:
“He is a player that has come to our attention but I’m led to believe there is a number of clubs that have enquired about him, so it is more a case of what Barnsley do, what they decide and obviously what the player decides.
“It is tentative from us but if anything happens, we will have to wait and see.
“I’m not in a position to say (whether Charlton had made a bid) actually because I’ve just come from training.
“I don’t personally do that side of things, I couldn’t really tell you if we have or haven’t.
“We’ve made enquiries and it hasn’t really progressed from there, that’s all I can say at the moment.
“Danny Haynes is a good player and one I feel has got pace.
“He can play up top, he has played his career up top and on the right wing but I see him more as a striker.
“We don’t have any real out and out pace in the side. We are a good side, we play a lot of good football with our movement and passing ability, but most teams have out and out pace in the side.
“It is just a different option for us and it is always good to have different options within your squad and he comes into that category.
“It is a long way off whether we can get him.If we do, it may move quickly, if not, he may go elsewhere.
“That is just where we are with him at the moment,” said Chris.
With the Addicks travelling to Sheffield on Friday, the formalities could even be completed before Saturday’s game against the Owls. With the bid accepted, it leaves the medical and Haynes’ personal terms to be agreed. If they can be concluded on Friday, Haynes could be on the bench at Hillsborough.
